Garden Thyme programs are held on the third Saturday of each month and are FREE for members of Old Sturbridge Village.

Led by Village horticultural and agricultural staff, these programs and workshops are held at various sites and deal with a variety of plant-related themes and topics.

Participants gather at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m. each month and are led to the appropriate site or setting.

Do you own a favorite hoe? Or perhaps a special pair of gardening gloves? Bring your favorite garden-related holiday gift idea for an interactive show and tell.

"Cooking with Heirlooms"

Learn about heirloom varieties of your favorite vegetables, along with a little bit of the history behind them. Find out why some of the hottest chefs in the country are using locally grown, heirloom varieties to add value to their menus.

"Fruit Pruning"

Pruning of apple trees, currant bushes, raspberry brambles and more will be covered in this hands-on basic pruning session. Participants will learn the how, when and where of spring (& summer) pruning. Participants can bring hand pruners and disinfectant, all other tools will be provided!

"Transplanting Tips and Tricks"

Learn to grow your own healthy transplants indoors, and learn some techniques for getting young plants safely into their proper place in your garden.

"Summer Bulbs"

For over a decade we have been growing cannas in our display gardens and visitors love them. Learn how to give these and other summer ‘bulbs' a head start each spring by planting them indoors. Culture and winter storage will also be discussed.

"Good Bug / Bad Bug"

Not all insects are bugs, and not all bugs are bad. Come and learn to identify friends and foes of the garden. We will discuss how to attract beneficial insects and some ways to deter destructive ones.

"Soil Management"

Learn how to amend your soil to make it the ideal place for your growing needs. Starting a new garden and maintaining an existing one will be covered.

"Weed Identification"

Learn how to identify weeds, when and why to prevent them, and some of the lore behind these down-to-earth "guardians of the soil". Come to know, appreciate, and better understand these plants apparently destined to "inherit the earth".

"Is it done yet? Or, When to Harvest"

Is that melon ripe? Should you use that squash yet? What's the best time to pick a beet? The answers to these questions and more will be covered in this session designed to help you get the most out of your vegetable garden.

"Dried Flowers"

September is the month when dried flowers come into their glory. Learn how to grow period "everlastings" as well as modern plants that are suitable for drying. We will cover everything from seed starting to harvest and crafting.

"The Art of Grafting"

Learn how to graft your own fruit trees. The selection of root stock and fruit varieties will be discussed and simple grafting techniques will be demonstrated.

November 17, 2012
"Holiday Wreath Making and Decorations"

Learn how to craft your own evergreen wreaths, swags and garlands just in time for the holidays. Decorating ‘Della Robbia' style will also be discussed.
